Versatile, strong and affordable SOHO WiFi solution |
I was a complete newcomer to WiFi, if not computing, and had already owned a Netgear DM602 modem for some time. Wed recently purchased a Mac G4 Powerbook and the temptation to use the AirPort was too great. After previous satisfaction with Netgear, I chose this. It looks great, as if that were important, but its no LinkSys chunk and stands very stylishly next to its sister modem in my room. Less superficially, it can take 4 ethernet devices (plenty, one assumes if youre planning on using wireless as well), which appealed to me.Out of the box it didnt work with my modem (a router in and of itself as well as a modem), though this was resolved with some fairly complex networking under guidance from Netgears technical support. It now sits at one end of our apartment and runs 2 WiFi devices (the Mac and a Win98SE laptop) to a very satisfactory speed. We can stream sound and video on three devices at the same time, throughout the building and beyond (well of course weve tried!). I also have a very old Win95 device connected via ethernet, alongside an HP JetDirect print server and my PlayStation2. Its hard to believe we set up a home network for so little. By the way, as far as the PS2 goes, I have had no problems with connectivity that other mates havent experienced also. Not having tried SOCOM, I dont know if the voice features would work, but network play on the games I do have (FireWarrior and Midnight Club II) works a treat. I would certainly recommend the WiFi standard, and see no reason myself to exceed 802.11b (11Mbps) for a long time - my ADSL/Broadband is only half a meg after all. This product has not let us down at all, and although you may be disheartened by a lack of out-of-the-box functionality, Netgear tech support will help you through it just fine.
